Question:

Why is marijuana really illegal?

What is it that bonds Americans together. It certainly isn't common ancestry and blood. It is the strong core values the majority of us share. Values that are not only extolled in the constitution, but were obviously also influential in forming the American dream. Hard work and responsibility are certainly two very important virtues to Americans. Marijuana seems to defy core American virtues. Some might even see it as the complete opposite of American virtues. Could the real reason marijuana is illegal be that it goes against, and challenges American virtues?

  1. If virtues was the case, then why does something that causes thousands of unnecessary fatal accidents each year, advertised during sporting events like the Olympics? It has nothing to do with virtues, it has to do with money. If there was a way for the government to profit off of it, it would probably be legal. I am in no way advocating Marijuana, but I know that alcohol is a much more dangerous and anger-inducing substance.

  2. I watched a special about Marijuana use in the US on The History Channel.  According to them, marijuana was first declared illegal as an excuse for arresting Mexican immigrants, who were the largest users at the time.  So marijuana was originally outlawed based on racism, not constitutionality.  The same special went on to say our founding fathers did not include banned substances when writing the Constitution because they did not believe the government should have dominion over what citizens chose to put into their bodies.

  3. Just like prohibition in the 1920's, marijuana was and is thought of as being "bad" for society, so it's outlawed. But just like prohibition, we may find that fighting it may actually be worse for society than just letting it be.

  4. This is just my opinion, but I think that the reason marijuana is illegal is the fact that the govt cannot control it.  You can grow it almost anywhere.  There are some that say it is a pain killer, can you imagine how much money the pharmaceuticals would lose if you grew your own pain killers?  It's about greed Apollo.

  5. To undermine african american culture.

  6. It is a drug.  and the only other questions I found in your prose to answer was the last sentence ~ the answer is NO.

Plain and simple ~ it is an illegal drug.

  7. The reason marijuana is illegal is because a few scientist did some research that conclude with the false impression that marijuana and alcohol are gateway drugs. This is called the "gateway theory". That is exactly what it is, a theory. Since then there has been no scientific proof that there really is a gateway process.

Since the government took the theory and ran with it, they tried the same thing with alcohol, prohibition, but that didn't work. Since the public accepted this one it just stayed.

  8. If you truly want to know why pot is illegal in the US and around the world, watch the movie "Grass".  It is a very good, funny, and informative documentary with Woody Harrelson who was in Cheers, Natural Born Killers, etc.  You can see it at...

  9.   No, I dont think this is the reason Marijuana is illegal. If core values were what determined drug laws alone, I think Cocaine and Meth would be advertised on billboards and sold at ballgames. They're the drugs that speed you up, make you stay awake longer, push you to go further than you normally would and make work interesting. They are drugs compatible with capitalism and enterprise, yet they're still illegal. (But still make note that every office still has a coffee pot and every gas station a cooler full of energy drinks. We still like a good pick-me-up here.)
