  1. Marketing is not risky; marketing the wrong product or marketing a good product/service to the wrong people IS risky.

    Well thought out marketing pays off big while those folks who put no thought into it and use a "Let's throw some at the wall and see what sticks" are fools because that's a fast way to bankruptcy.

    If you're a small business, you can market easier and more efficiently than a large corporation can. This is why many large companies spend billions on marketing research because they cannot adjust to the market place quick enough whereas a small time proprietor can quickly adjust their strategies and re-enter the market quickly.
