  1. Max Surface Area: more area for cell membrane to allow in nutrients, benefiting cell's survival. More transpiration and osmosis

    Min volume: More volume means the need for more nutrients and more waste material

    Maximizing the surface  area of a cell =  The more cell membrane per unit of protoplasm that a cell has, the easier it is for that cell to maintain "Homeostasis".

    Minimizing the volumae of a cell = A low surface-to-volume ratio doesn't waste membrane material.

    As a general rule, the smaller something is, the more membrane or "surface area" it has.
