  1. Mean is the same as average.

    However, mean/average isn't always a good indicator of the data. If you have {1,1,1,9,9,9} then the average (5) won't tell you much about the data. Median in this case wouldn't either.

    Sometimes, like {1,2,3,4,5,6,8} median is good, possibly even better than mean.

    In like {1,2,2,2,2,9} mode would be best.

    It depends on the case.

The mean is not a good indicator of the average when you have extreme scores, a few of them.  It will make the mean skewed, higher than it "should" be, or "lower" than it should be.  The median or mode is a better indicator of "average" when you have out laying scores, or extreme scores.  (college prof)
