Why is medium improtant to art?

  2. Medium is a tool. If art is about translating the abstract (i.e. feelings, thoughts) into the visible (paintings, photos, sculptures etc.), then you need a tool to help you do it.

    The logic which follows is you must know your tool well. If you have a tool but do not know how to use it, then it defeats the purpose of having the tool. Hence every artist must know his/her medium well. If not, then what the artist intends to express will NOT get through to the audience.

    Without a tool, art cannot be made visible.
