  1. Mexico was a colony of spain for 300 years. For this period of time all the spanish did was exploit mexico for its gold and natural rescources. They made the indians mine for gold and silver, grow their crops and be there servants and mistreated them for all of this time. Hidalgo, a priest, son of 2 spanish parents, was able to see all of the injustices and the "slavery" system the spanish used during the era. So in 1810, he got all of the mistreated people together who were also fed up and they marched on the spanish and the revolution spread throughout the country like wildfire and eventually the Mexicans gained their independence from Spain. Hidalgo was murdered by the spanish during the war, but thanks to him Mexico became independent and he was one of the few who stood up for the people.

  2. Miguel Hidalgo is the equivalent of George Washington for the USA.  He was a very vocal active promoter for Mexico independence from Spain.  Eventually he incited for a fight and lead a group of armed men in the fight for Independence.  His call for arms was made on dawn of 16 September of 1810.  Once Mexico became independent it has celebrated the "birth" of the nation in 16 September (equivalent of July 4th for the USA.)
