  1. This is an excellent question. I think some people might get to their jobs on Monday or Tuesday and just never leave until the week ends. I've seen offices with comfortable looking couches in them. I've even seen a few with a regular bed....and a night-light.

  2. Because some of them don't have to work Fridays or they can go in a little later. Plus Monday s the worst because they are not necessarily going to work they can be running errands that they couldn't do on the weekends because the places were closed or closed early

  3. More people can go in a little later or leave a little early towards the end of the week.

  4. various reasons, but some people only work 4 day weeks mon-thu, so less traffic on fridays.

other times, especially in summer and 3 day weekends, many people take off friday as a vacation/personal/sick day, as a jump on their vacations to go out of town.  in a large city like chicago, thousands of people doing this can make an impact on traffic flowing smoother on fridays.

(and yes, i have slept over at work before after doing multiple days of double shifts, yes the couches can be comfy.  some of my work places even had lockers/showers so that you could always look refreshed when starting the day.  kept me off the roads and out of the traffic flow)
