Why is my 10 months old daughter's (race: mixed but more black) hair shedding so much lately?

My daughter is 10 months and she was born with the thickest hair. She had until a little less than a month ago. She still has plenty of hair, but it won't stop shedding and I noticed it is softer and seems a little thinner. What is going on? Would you worry? She is mixed but more black than anything.

  1. sometimes that can happen... most babies that have a full head of hair when they are born usually lose it a few months later or it becomes thinner... and it re grows usually thicker... it's just the corse it takes... I had hair when i was born, i lost it a few months later and it didn't grow back fully until i was 2... every child is different though... Some never lose it and some just lose a little... If it gets worse and you are worried just contact your pediatrician, but i'm sure it's just taking the normal course

  2. No dont worry it will grow back but it is from rubbing against car chairs and things like that

  3. Exact same thing happened with my son.  Almost all babies born with hair lose it sometime during the first year.

My son was born with thick, straight dark, dark black hair.  By six months, he had completely lost it all.  He now has light brown hair with strong copper tones and it's a mass of curls.  (We call him "Coppertop" as a silly nickname.)

  4. I don't know if this is true or not, but I was told many babies are covered in hair completely when they are in the womb, but they shed most of their hair before birth. My baby was born with a lot of hair on his head, and now it looks like he's wearing a rug, he's shedding his hair from the sides and he looks funny.

It is normal, especially the bald spot behind due to the baby rubbing his/her head against pillows and such.

Don't rush to the ER, but next time you go to the pediatrician, ask him/her, if it gives you peace of mind. I wouldn't worry, though.
