Why is my 2 min film 200 mb?

I want to make a 2 min film and post it on YouTube. However it comes out as 200 mb in AVI format. Help!

  1. You probably have it set to the highest quality. If you want the size to decrease. Change the video quality to a lower setting or convert it on your computer.


  2. Video files are notoriously large (in fact 200mb is still quite small for a video file). Try and get your hands on a good compression programme. TMPEG 4 is pretty good for the PC. Compress your files to .wmv format or similar and you should see a size reduction but remember the smaller the file, the less quality there will be.

  3. AVI isn't a video format, it's a file format.  The video contained in the avi file may be highly compressed, e.g. DivX or it may be lightly compressed, e.g. DV.  I'd assume that the codec used to encode your video wasn't using a lot of compression, so it's bigger than you want it to be.  As others have said, the downside to using a lot of compression can be a loss of quality, though you're only going to run into real problems if you try editing your compressed video.  Stick with the light compression while you're editing and then do the final render using heavy compression such as WMV.
