I have a 2002 dodge durango, and my driver side front brake has started making a squilling noise. It only does it at low speeds. Like less then 3mph. I have check the pads on both sides and they still look almost new.

  1. The brake pads have a metal tab on them that, when the brake pads wear down, rubs on the rotor surface.  This is what is producing the squeal.  It's there to alert you to the brake pads being almost worn out.  The longer you continue to drive the car, the worse the noise will get. Drive it too much longer and the brake pad material will be gone and the backing plate will eat into the rotor every time you apply the brakes.

In simpler terms .... that noise is telling you to replace the pads now!

  2. idk but my mom's does that too. :)

  3. MOST PADS NOW DAYS ARE MADE WITH TINY METAL SLIVERS IN THEM. THEY ARE CALLED SEMI-METALLIC PADS. IF YOU HAPPEN TO HAVE A BIGGER PIECE OF METAL IN THE PADS IT MIGHT TAKE A FEW DAYS FOR THE NOISE TO GO AWAY.  ON THE OTHER HAND IF THE BRAKES HAVE NOT BEEN CHANGED IN A WHILE YOU MIGHT WANT TO TAKE IT BY A SHOP AND HAVE THEM MEASURE THE PADS. IF THE PAD IS LESS THAN 3/32'S THICKNESS IT IS TIME TO HAVE THEM  REPLACED. THE TAB ON THE SIDE OF THE BRAKE PADS IS CALLED A SQUEAL TAB. IT IS TO LET YOU KNOW THAT YOU ARE GETTING CLOSE TO THAT 3/32'S MARK AND YOU NEED TO HAVE THEM CHECKED. HOPE THIS HELPS.
