Question:

Why is my 3 year old nephew suddenly stuttering?

My nephew has always talked very plainly, but just in the last 3-4 days, he has started severely stuttering. Nothing has happened to him, nothing traumatic either physically or emotionally. My brother and his wife are concerned, but their doctor has said it's normal and not to worry. I know that 3 year olds stutter, but can it be normal to go from not at all to severe stuttering all at once?

  1. It can be when they have a problem getting out what he wants to say. If he has a lot to say and his brain can't get it all out the way it wants to they can stutter because they want to say one thing and come out with another. Good luck.

  2. It is normal, but a way to fix the problem is to have him hold something in his left hand. Your speech center is in the right side of your brain and since things are reversed (right side controls left side etc) holding something in his hand will help him to concentrate and puts words together more effectively. When he starts studdering grab his left hand while he is talking and it will calm him down enough to put the words together. My three year old does this and all I do is reach down and grab his left hand. They just get so excited sometimes when they are telling us stuff it starts coming out funny!! This trick also works on people who have had a stroke and have speech problems.

  3. well maybe as his speech advanced he began stuttering. like if he can only say a few words he wouldnt but now that he is 3 he should be able to say longer sentances and now you can tell he stutters

  4. Yep its normal.  The same exact thing happened with my sister right around the time she turned three.  My Mom asked the Dr. too, as she was concerned.  The stutterring only lasted a few months.  Apparently its some kind of stage that toddlers often go through.  So tell them not to worry, he will be fine. :)
