Why is my Box Turtle's skin dry?

I have two box turtles which I've had for 6 years. Both were obtained from the wild, they weren't bought from a store. Their skin flakes a lot and the color isn't as vibrant/bright as it used to be.

  1. They are probably dehydrated.

Wild Box Turtles, especially Easterns, spend a lot of time in high-humidity habitats and do best when they have ready access to soaking pools and hiding places with 90% humidity, but rather mild temps- 75-85F.

It might also be dietary. Most people feed captive Box Turtles too much vegetation, when the wild Box Turtle eats about 75% insects and invertebrates.

  2. Nivea deficiency.

  3. prob. just getting old.

  4. The water kneads to be change. Maybe you nead clean or salt water.

  5. Could be related to diet, heat, or UVB lighting.  A lot depends on your setup and care.  Have they been checked for parasites?  See this site for complete info:

  6. It could be multiple things. One thing you can do if the turtles will let you is rub some aloe on their skin. This will help condition it and keep it moist. I have worked with tortoises and this is what we do.
