Why is my Dog trapped in a kennel?

My Dog Gabe is the best Dog I know of, and spends a lot of his time in a kennel, although at night I let him out to sleep with me in my room and in the morning outside to roam around the yard supervised by myself, but my Father says it is good for him to spend quality time in the kennel. I just thought this was a good ethical "pet" question.

a dog needs to know his place in the family, but Ive owned dogs that have rarely slept in their kennels..preferring the couch instead lol

I use kennels for sleeping, but for my dachshunds, I buy the shepard size and only use half for the bed.  They need a quiet place of their own, but not locked in.  It should be thier 'safe place' and use it when they want to.

Well your Father is wrong. Dogs need exercise, attention and companionship just like humans. You wouldn't like being in a kennel while your mom/dad/brother/sister/friends walk around doing things and playing but all you can do is sit in a cage would you?  well neither does the dog.

Kennels have there place and should be used with GOOD judgment.

I encourage you to educate you Father on how to treat dogs, go to the library and read about dog care and training and teach the people around you the right ways to care for a pet

It's ok for him to sleep in the kennel.  But you should let him spend alot of time with the family.  He doesn't want to be in the kennel all day.  Dogs prefer to be with people.

Quality time? Sounds like your dog is being locked up like a common criminal.  No dog should ever be left in the kennel all the time.    The only time I believe a dog should be in a kennel is if you are going to be gone for a little while or over night if you do not trust them on their own while away or sleeping.

Let your dog out. Take him on walks play with him. Don't let him sit in a kennel and rot.
