  1. is a bit hard to see in a macbook, as it does not actually tell you the signal strength and the connection speed, but it must be connected at a really slow connection speed.

One thing you could do is connect to the router and change its wireless channel this helps sometimes.

If there is another router in your area that has a stronger signal than yours and is on the same channel this will cause havoc with your connection

Relocate the router higher is better in most cases

  2. You might be   connecting to a server where there is more than your two systems connecting to it which is common for home wifi in public areas or your wifi unit might not be recieving enough signal.

  3. first wi fi is tons slower than any cable

next speed drops off like a rock with distances over 30 feet

number of things you can do

    1) change channel from the default channel 6 to anything else - channel 1 and 11 as a start

neighbors signals can drift in long distances out of nowhere and cause interferene

    2) make sure router is high and unclutted

      - one idiot i knew had the router in the basement , in a furnace room - read pipes ,duct , furnace , washing machine, heavy metal file cabinets.  The router was on the floor under a thick metal desk.  He had no reception on the main floor and was receiving a neighbors open Linksys router on floor 2

    What a moron

have the router high and uncluttered

turn on security - wep or wpa

it is not out of the question that a neighbor has latched onto your signal

as well try setting wireless to g only rather than "mixed"

change the ssid from the dlink "default"  to anything else - even if you add one digit

the summary is that wireless can never be as fast as a cable but its convenient and high tech

    good resource

  4. Do you have more than one computer using the wireless network...routers run best for just one computer at a time.

  5. Configure Static IP Address for you Windows 98 device, and as for MAC it should just run fine. You can find out more on how to do it on Windows, check the links below.
