Question:

Why is my TiVo making a strange noise?

It isn't broken. Everything is still working perfectly at this point. Sometimes though, whether it's recording or not, it just starts making this strange buzzing noise. It happens for a few seconds and then it stops.

Anyone had any experience with this? I'm mainly worried that this might be something that happens before it suddenly gives out.

  1. What David said -- it's the hard drive.  And yeah, it will spin at odd times, whether you're recording or not, because the DVR accesses the TiVo service to get programming updates, and it performs background checks and cleanups, so the disk can be spinning at just about any time.

  2. Hi Crystal,

That is your hard drive. The hard drive in TiVo spins 24/7.

If your TiVo fails & you need it repaired here is a place that will do it - http://weaknees.com/

I hope you don't need their help. A noisy drive isn't necessarily of emenient failure but it does happen.

  3. That's your hardrive. IT's where the Tivo saves everything.. anyways.. not going to explain how a hardrive works but they typically spin around 7200 per minute... so ya... they're not silent... if its really noisy that could be a sign its on its deathbed... but audible noise from a hard drive is common.
