Why is my ac unit not cooling?

I just had a guy out and he cleaned the coils and changed the filter, but the unit is still blowing not very cool air. It won't go below 85 degrees inside. Does it take a little while to start blowing cool air or something?

  1. I think that there are a leakge in the systems leaks the refrigerant which enters reduces the capability of the unit to cool the air.

  2. should take less than a minute. check a few other things( dont laugh they are necessary)

is the thermostat set to cool and set below 85F

does the thermostat take batteries (some really do)

does the outside compressor run, is it noticeably level

if all of those check out, you will need a professional to do  a pressure check. the  last man might have.  after that there are really only afew common things it could be, bad wiring, bad compressor, the unit is too small or the refrigerant contains incompressibles.

  3. Probably needs the coolant recharged.  This requires a professional HVAC shop to come out.  If that's not the problem, they will tell you.

  4. No more that 2 minutes.

AC are in the $100 range for a window unit. Junk it and buy a new one.

If it's a central unit, get a competent repair guy in to check it. The last one was obviously not .
