Why is my best guy friend so possessive?

Let's call him X.

X talks about how much he likes me to my best friend, and then he'll talk REALLY dirty about some other girl. It's really annoying.

And he gets jealous of every guy I talk to or that likes me. He's already cussed out a guy for liking me.

I already know he likes me, but I just don't feel the same way about him. I like someone else and I'm afraid if we start dating X will hurt him or something.

What should I do?

He's too possessive and we aren't even dating!
