Tech Lady, please get off your high horse and realize that they've got bills to pay, too. Companies are not, as most ignorant people charactarize them, greedy cheats. They charge a fair market price for a service provided.

As to the question of the cable bill being so high, there could be a number of causes. The normal market price of the channels provided could be going up for the company, to which they respond by slightly raising the rates for customers. There could be some sort of billing error. Or, you could just be expecting the service to cost less than it really does.

My suggestion is this: call your cable company and ask them (kindly, politely, with an even tone of voice) why your bill is high. Have them explain the different services on your account to make sure you're not paying for something you don't want and also to double check for double billing. Be patient with them because sometimes it can get a bit difficult to get billing correct and they are working off strict policy (if they stray from it they get penalized). If the services are exactly what they should be, consider rightsizing your services. Make a list of the channels you have to have and the ones you want but could live with out and see if you and the CSR can't come to a better arrangement for your services.

Because the cable companies are greedy cheats.  I don't understand it either.  I'm getting a inferior service with fewer channels than satellite and they still want to charge me $40/month.  I don't get it.

Cable has historically been very high.  Try switching to satellite and you'll be happier.  Cable charges what are called "Franchise Fees" that satellite doesn't charge.  You will be much happier with satellite.  Also if you're trying to save money check out dish network.  They have dual receivers that will save you even more money.
