Question:

Why is my cactus dying?how can i save it?

its 10 years old & just moved from its pot & planted in garden.its 3m from a pine tree which overhangs slightly.its wilting & brown at base.

  1. do not over water. i water my cactus once a month and let it drain completely.  


  2. It could be a few things. The fact that you've moved it from the pot into the garden has probably stressed it, which is understandable considering it has been in the pot for 10 years. Another possibility is that you are over-watering it, this often causes cactii to rot. The other issue might be the pine tree. Either from lack of sun, or possibly from the tannins that pine needles put into the soil. It's hard to get things to grow in that kind of soil, too acidic. The fact that it's rotting at the base doesn't sound good, but I would put it back in the pot out in the sun and see how it goes.  

  3. Pine bark and needles in the soil, stress to much water. If it was doing good in the pot best to leave it in pot or dig hole large enough to move potting soil with it. Be sure not to water to much.

  4. whatever you do, don't over-water it.  It needs minimal amounts of water and nutrients and lots of sunshine.  all you can do is hope that it recovers from the transplant.  If any extremities are dying, cut them off.
