Why is my car idling so high?

when I start driving the car accelerates without my pushing on the gas

  1. If it was idling normal and just started fast idling, you may have a vacuum hose disconnected or the "dash pot", is sticking. The dash pot is a valve on the carb. that allows the idle to return slowly so the engine does not stall on rapid deceleration.

  2. the idle air control valve will cause one to idle up real high when you first start it,take it to auto zone and have them scan the computer its free then they can give you a code for whats causing that too happen,its usually something simple like the idle air control valve or a temperature sensor going bad,good luck.

  3. whether your car has a carb or fuel injection,  unmetered air can

    cause this problem. Leaks can occur around a butterfly valve shaft

    or the carb mounting gasket. If you have a fuel injected system

    get some injector cleaner and shoot it in the opening (beyond the air filter) to clean the air ports . You can look for air being sucked into the carb by using soapsuds on the outside of the carb body.
