My Nissan Sunny model 1997 is turning off from time to time while driving.

Unfortunately no technician was able to detect this defect.

What could be the problem in your opinion?

Thanks in advance.

  1. You mean you're driving along just fine, then all of a sudden it stops?

I had a similar problem with another car in the past (not a Nissan).  It turns out it was an electrical problem.  Something was shorting out, and it would suddenly stop.

Take it to another mechanic.  Having a sudden stall in traffic is very dangerous.

  2. If your steering column is loose it messes with the neutral safety switch. Obviously there may be other problems but at work I see this now and then.

  3. Sometimes it can be just bad gas from a gas station ex: water getting into the gas tank at a gas station or some are just crooked and will water down gas.  If this is the case it will usually sputter just a little bit then stall in the middle of the road.  This can be fixed by purchasing dry gas in the little containers and using it by adding to your gas tank the next time you get gasoline.  If this doesn't work than there's a good chance it's your fuel pump.  If it's just stalling without any notice it is an electrical problem and will have to be taken to a Nissan dealership to have them service it.

  4. My Nissan Pulsar did the same.  I would be in the middle of a road and it would turn off.  I found out it was the fuel pump.  To get it started I had to squirt gas into it.  I eventually got it fixed, and the car was good as new.
