HI my cat is 4 years old. He has always been a large cat (15lbs or so) In the last month he has lost so much weight and is getting really skinny. He does have fleas. He is still eating great, drinking his water and playing like usual. Should I be worried? What do you think it could be?

Thank you in advance.

  1. My cat had an absessed tooth that caused him serious weight loss before I discovered it.  But if you're sure your cat is eating very well, that's not it.  Unfortunately deadly diseases like leukemia can cause this type of weight loss.  Remember too that they shed alot of hair this time of year and that could be it.  You really need to get him to a vet if you can afford it.

  2. They typically lose a bit of weight before winter comes. Shedding and all of that other fun stuff.. Anyways, take him to a vet just to be sure.

  3. Is he drinking more water than usual? If he is that is a sign of diabetes and he should have lab work done to make sure. If you have changed his food that is another possibility.

Fleas carry tapeworms, so there is a possibility that is the problem and he needs to be treated. Tapeworms can cause an animal to lose weight over time.

  4. My cat actually went through the same thing, he was about 4 years old and acted the same as yours. It started to worry me so my husband and I took him to the vet about a week after we noticed he was getting skinnier. Now don't get upset because every cat is different, but the vet found a tumor in his abdomen and it was causing the nutrient of his food to not be absorbed as easily into his body. He died a week after the visit. But there are options with cats with tumors if it's caught early, and your cat could be in a different position, as I said. I only mentioned this because those were the symptoms Bugs had. I've also read that certain health problems, other than tumors, can cause cats to not absorb nutrients, but there are medicines for that, that you can ask your local vet for.

Good luck with your cat, and I truly hope that he gets better very soon. Please let me know what's wrong as soon as you find out.

P.S. A lot of veterinary clinics can be very helpful if you call with a problem. This way you can explain your problems to them over the phone and not get charged for a visit. I'd call clinics from the yellow pages if you don't the the money for an actual visit.

  5. Is your cat peeing alot more? drinking more?

What about it's p**p?   Weight loss can be something that may become serious if it is not treated. Hyperthyroid, diabetes are possible

    Vets soon

  6. My guess is he has worms probably tapeworms from the fleas.

I would take him to the vet.  And, why does he have fleas?  How would you like to have them things crawling all over you?
