Question:

Why is my cat so illusive and unfriendly?

She won't let any of us, except my dad, walk over and pick her up. She will occasionally come over to us, especially in the morning when she is the nicest. Is she just a cranky cat? Or is she not accustomed to us (we didn't get her as a kitten, but we've had her about a year and half).

She even growls sometimes when you hold her...

And no, we never have and never will abuse her or be mean to her.

Please help??

  1. typical cat. after they eat they have little use for the people that they see as their servants.

if you dont like this, you dont like cats.

  2. I'm afraid she's just like that.  Often female cats are not friendly.  If you want a real lap cat, you have to have a male.  BTW it's "elusive."

  3. Well most of the time it's best to get your cat as a Kitten so you can totally spoil it and give it lots of attention.  I read somewhere that a cat should be handled by at least 4 different people and pet about 40 minutes a day until 14 months old (adulthood) to really be comfortable around other people. OF course if you live alone this will pertain mostly to you.

It is important to socialize any of your animals with other poeple and animals at a young age.

And i would also suggest maybe 2 cats at the same time so that they are used to having to share and not being the center of attention all the time.

  4. Some cats are very much a one person cat.  Does your dad feed her?  That could be one reason why she likes him.  You could try feeding her.

It does not matter if you get her as a kitten or not.  You cannot raise a cat to be what you want if they have other plans.

Female cats can be more particular about being held than males in my experience.  Some cats never ever like being picked up, it is their personality, just like some people don't like being hugged or some really love hugs.

I would suggest you stop trying to make her fit into what you want, a snuggle cat, and try to find out what she likes and enjoy those things with her.  Does she like fetch?  Does she like strings?  How about a laser light?

  5. This is problaby because the cat doesn't trust you yet.  I assure you if you play with her for a while she will get accustomed to you and start loving you alot more.  I read online that cats only growl at people when they don't trust them.  So just play with her for a couple hours of day and feed her plentiful.  She will definitely be rubbing all over you in a few weeks. (:

  6. In order to be "friendly," cats must be handled a lot within the first several weeks of their lives.  It sounds as if your cat was not.  Keep working with her to get her to warm up to you, but bear in mind that her personality was fixed within those first few weeks.  She will always be aloof.
