  2. Try this. click start and then click search. In the search bar type disk defragmentation. when this program comes up with an icon of multi-colored blocks, open the program and follow the directions from there. Hope that helps!

  3. Do a  system restore to some day last week when it was running correctly.

If this does not work then do a disk cleanup.. erase all temporary internet files, do a virus and spyware scan and then do a disk defragmentation.

    Hope this helps!

  4. I've had the same trouble with 3 different XP systems; I think it started with the first of a flurry of Microsoft Updates...

Anyway, one unit had to drop my 'Blink' anti-v; another had to have Internet Explorer re-installed, the 3rd system is still a work in progress.

First, disconnect from the internet (but have the Windows firewall ON) then disable your anti virus...then try running a few of your regular applications to see if they get back to normal speed.  If that's it, you might consider a different anti-v.  I dropped Blink and installed Avast! and things are back to normal.

  5. Using a registry cleaner can clean up your computer and then make your computer faster,Why?the reason is that there may be some registry errors and remnant, corrupt files and temp files in your computer to cause "computer slow".

Every time you install and uninstall software on your computer and surfing online you create junk in the computer registry.over time, the registry can grow to enormous proportions, especially if the various programs you've installed do not do a good job of deleting and/or updating it's Registry entries. You need to scan and clean your computer with registry cleaner to make it fast.Good Registry Cleaner will improve your computer and Internet performance dramatically!

  10. As this began suddenly last week it isn't a slow build up of temporary files and other junk stuff from too much installation and removal of software applications.

You very well could have a virus even if you have an up to date security application. There is far more unknown viruses and other malware than signatures for known viruses and other malware. The anti-virus labs can only handle the processing of about one third of the malware that comes into the labs. I read this in a highly reputable security website forum, and have every reason to trust their information. Anti-virus applications are only as good as their signatures, and even a good Heuristic scan can only catch so much. So, Yes, you very well could have become infected last week when the slowdown began.

This is especially true due to how quickly it began, as I mentioned before. Because you specifically know when the slowdown occurred a System Restore Point should clear it off. If for any reason it doesn't, you can either go to a HijackThis forum, or take your system to a reputable repair shop. One is more time consuming, but free, and the other means you must take your system to it, wait for it, and then pay the fee.
