Why is my computer shutting itself off?

I cant get by computer to stay on for longer than 20min at a time. I have ran antivirius and spyware, and still no help. I don't think its a temperature problem. I downloaded speed fan and the temp is between 37C and 41C. I was told this is normal. I opened up the side panel and cleaned out all the dust so i dont think that's it either. Also it seems to shut down quicker when I'm running a program like UTorrent. I don't really want to spend money to have it fixed. I have been thinking about getting a new tower, but i would rather save the 500 bucks. I'm looking for a easy fix. Any Suggestions?

I have a hp pavillion desktop.

Its about three years old.

  1. check the power splay FAN .and remove the Ram and put it again and check the processor FAN .  and good luck

its not about cleaning .. look you know the power spluy right ? check the FAN if its not working so this is the problem and you need to replace with another new power spluy .

the power spluy is where u put the cable power in.

  2. Overheating is your problem

    1) remove side of case check fans are working and vanes are clean remove fan from CPU ' Be careful " check the Heatsink for dirt and fluff clogging up the vanes also check video card fan and heatsink for dirt etc

    2) check the power supply external vent holes are not blocked and use vacuum cleaner to suck any dirt out of it  "Do not remove it "
