when

a) notification is necessary in Indiana,

b) the superintendent in Indiana can request age/grade level info. and also

c) the superintendent in Indiana can request to see attendence records.

Here in Alabama, we did notify once at around age 7, based upon compulsory attendence laws, but there is no legal basis for any further requests.

When I learned that Indiana, where we may be moving, was green, I was elated, but now I wonder what makes it considered green. I can't find anything that makes Alabama more regulated, and yet we're yellow?

I know to ask HSLDA. We've been members for many years and will call them, but do you guys have any explanations?

(We've been homeschooling for 15 years so far, and we don't want intrusion into our fruitful methods.

We have four wonderful sons.)

Thanks!

  1. I always thought that the colors on the map indicated not how homeschool "friendly" the states were, as far as the laws, but what was going on in the states as far as proposed new legislation regarding homeschool, or any trouble in that state.

I might be wrong or it might have changed, but that was always the impression I was under.

  2. No explanation.  On the map it says that green means that no notification is necessary but in the rules listed on the link it gives, it shows that you need to notify.

So, you are right-- there is a discrepancy between the map and the way the law is listed.

Still looks easy, so that's a good thing.

  3. I see you've received the basic answer to your question, but I think you should know that you have to register *every* year here in Alabama, not just once at age 7. If you're with a cover school (which you must be, unless you're taking the credited teacher option) then that cover school will take care of the paperwork for you each year. If you've been told otherwise, you've been told wrong.
