She decribes her style to me as 'emo/scene'. On Friday she came home from school in peices sobbing and ran upstair saying that someone at school called her that in the locker room...she's hardly spoken to me since. What is a 'fake alternachick' and how can I get her to calm down?

  1. There's nothing you can do. Kids will be kids. I'm sorry to be so blunt, but you're daughter needs to face reality that people are going to make fun of her no matter what. ALL kids are made fun of, not just your daughter. I'm fifteen, so trust me, I know. I go to high school. A "fake alternachick" is an immature way of calling someone a poser. She just has to deal with it. And if you go in and talk to the kids/principal/teachers yourself, it'll only make it WAY more worse, so don't. That's how kids are today and you just have to deal with it.

  2. Tell your daughter to toughen up and stand up for herself. In the real world she can't break down and cry every time someone insults her.

  3. I've never heard of that before but I think it was that person's way of calling your daughter a poser.

If you don't know what that is a poser is someone who likes to think that they're cool and are trying to fit in with a specific group of people and aren't being accepted by them because the person is supposedly fake.

Whoever called your daughter that is very very mean and doesn't know what they're talking about.

Just tell your daughter that the girl who said that to her was just trying to get under her skin and her getting upset over it is giving that aweful girl just want she wants, a negative reaction from her. Tell your daughter to not give that girl what she wants and just ignore her and crush her disgusting twisted fun!

  4. A fake alternachick would be someone who pretends to be all alternative and different, but really isn't. Being alternative is cool now, so loads of people pretend to be alternative, which isn't really alternative at all. Do you get what I mean be that?

There's some quote that says truth hurts more then lies. The quote is probably correct in this case. Your kid thinks whoever called her that might be right, so she can't shrug it off, because it caused her to doubt herself and her convictions. If they called her that and it didn't cause her to doubt herself, she'd be angry, not hurt.

Just tell her you're there for her and hug her and let her work it out on her own. It sucks, but in the long run working this out is good for her. It'll help her figure out who she is and what she stands for and what it means to be alternative.

  5. i don't know. i only know what emo is and scene i guess is a new word for preapy.

but i have no idea what "fake alternachick" just tell her to be herself. if poeple have a probem tell her to ignore them.

  6. I believe a term you may be more familiar with from your school years (not sure how old you are) is "poser".

The specifics of "alternachick" doesn't matter. Did you like being called fake as a teen (or would you have liked it, if you weren't)? She obviously is trying to fit in a certain style that she thinks is cool (scene/emo) and was told she was not successful. Being told you're not "cool" when you're a teen (and image is everything) can be devastating.

The solution? What can you do, she has low self-esteem. Just be there for her. Keep lending your ear and shoulder, reassure her that she's beautiful, etc. Think of what it was like to be a teen; if you basically got called a loser in front of a bunch of people, what would have liked your parents to say to you? Maybe nothing, but at least show her you love her and are there to listen to her vent.

You don't have to be mean to her and tell her to buck up. I'm sure she knows people will be mean and insulting, but it doesn't make it hurt less. She doesn't need a lecture, she needs compassion.
