My border collie/ terrier mix, Rocko, who's almost 2 years old, is always chewing on his feet! It this due to allergies? I've given him benedryl, but it doesn't seem to help (just makes him lazy). Any ideas?

  1. Yes it does sound like allergies.  It could stem from something in your home, food or pollen.  Your vet will be able to treat him accordingly.

  2. Allergies. [= Talk to a Vet.

  3. Sometimes if animals have been running around outside they get things stuck between their toes or they might have a cut there.

Just let him get on with it or take him to the vets.

  4. Well I have an English Springer Spaniel who always is l*****g her paws just to clean herself and she even bites the rough spots on her nails so if you dog is in the same boat as mine you have nothing to worry about but if your dog is l*****g the same spot constantly to the point where it might be causing like skin irritation then you might want to get it looked at by a vet.

  5. My dog licks his feet a lot to clean them, he acts like a cat and tends to get fur balls just like them too, but it doesn't surprise me as he has med-long hair. Maybe he's just trying to clean his feet.

  6. Allergies come to mind but it can also be behavioral, bord border collies can become necrotic border collies especially when mixed with a normally hyper breed like terrier. Try a otc hydrocortisone spray and a food change to a premium food, my dog seemed to get relief after the second spraying of the Pet Relief stuff before any food changes. Also try changing to a non-grain/corn premium food like Taste of the Wild or there are dozens of other suggestions around this board, some dogs are even allergic to chicken meals, that narrows down your choices even further. Your vet can send you to an allergist but I'd prefer just to narrow down and eliminate possible allergens on my own. I already spend soooooo much on the dogs, I'm on first name basis with everyone at the pet store and vet office, I don't need an extra optional expense.

  7. Shake biscuits for him when he does it and he might stop and wont a biscuit.

  8. Two things come to mind.

Allergies or Skin infection between his toes.

    Time for a vet visit.

  9. I used to find that stuff like Shake n Vac in the carpet used to drive my dog mad, constantly l*****g his paws. Don't know if you use it, but it might be the cause.!!
