Why is my dog breathing fast when he is at rest?

He is a six year old golden retriever/chow mix with no medical problems. He lives outside. I noticed he's been breathing fast at rest for a few days. He is not overweight and his appetite is good. he's been breathing fast at rest when he's awake. i live in california and lately its been like between 80°-95° F outside

  1. have you had him tested for heart worms---that is one symptom and it is serious-- on the other hand mabe he is just hot---that is their way of cooling themselves

  2. He could just be panting, that's how dog's sweat, through their tongues.  Just make sure you change his water every hour to cold tap water.  Or half tap and half cold bottled water.

  3. Dogs pant to cool off.

  4. umm its hot!! and a dog has alot of hair and cant sweat! try going outside in a ski outfit!

  5. If he plays outside a lot, he might just be worn out. But, panting can be a sign of pain my dog is old and in pain a lot. Try taking him to the vet just in case.

  6. a dog's breathing regulates their temperature. if he's not sick then make sure he has fresh water & plenty of it. and a shady spot =)
