Okay, i want to know why my mountain fiest is scared of the hose. He runs outside when its raining and he stands in it like its nothing. I sprayed the hose up in the air like it was raining and he took off running in a corner. I sprayed him in the corner and he just went ballistic! Does anyone know whats wrong with him?

  1. Well if you want to get him use to the hose, then spraying him while he was cornered is not the way to go about it.  Some dogs love the water however, they are unsure of the nozzle and hose.  You have to gradually introduce them to it or, like y our dog, they will be scared of it and will not get the benefit of playing with the hose.  You need to let the dog look at the hose, and then let some water come out of the hose in a trickle. A full blown blast of water from a strange device will scare any dog who has never seen a hose before.  You  may have a problem now since you blasted him with the spray while he was already scared of it and in a corner.  That was really a dumb move on your part.

  2. Hi Friend,

Some dogs don't like water full stop.  Others it's down to age.  When a dog is a puppy they have 2 fear stages and this is problematic.  My Akita was scared of bangs, hill mounds and bikes.  Now he could not care less. When he was scared he was a puppy to 2 years of age.  He is nearly three and now has become mature and just does not freak out like he used too.  I would say do not worry.  Try using cups of water then progressing to the hose.  All the best.

  3. There's nothing wrong with him. Rain is a normal thing: it has an atmospheric condition, a smell, various ways he can predict and understand what's happening. Being squirted with the hose is an entirely different kettle of fish.

It's also possible he doesn't like the hose. I have a mongrel dog who loves, absolutely loves, swimming. He's an excellent swimmer and will stay in until I make him get out because he's shivering. He absolutely HATES the hose, even just to wash a bit of mud off his feet. My dear old Lasz abhorred swimming, but was fine with being hosed off and even bathed. It's an individual dog thing, I suspect.
