Question:

Why is my evergreen "Clematis Avalanche" unhappy?

I planted it last summer in a pot, and it's climbing a South East facing trellis. It did really well last year, flowering throughout the season.

This year a lot of it's leaves are shrivelling up. The tag doesn't mention pruning, just trimming to desired shape.

It's fed and watered regularly.

I have no option to plant it in the ground at that site because it's the concrete between ours and our neighbour's garages.

Any thoughts?

Thanks

  1. You have to have the roots and lowest part of the Clematis shaded otherwise they wilt, also put some , lime in the soil as clematis like slightly alkaline soil

  2. I know they like their roots in a cool place, so maybe the roots are getting too hot if they're against the pot.  You could try putting other pots around the pot, so that their foliage shades the soil and base.

To ensure you don't lose a clematis plant due to wilt, you should plant a clematis 6inches below the original soil level

  3. Because it saw a picture of Hillary Clinton.

  4. i have the same trouble; my clematis has gone the same way;so i cut it right down  to ground level got rid of all the dead leaves and it has revived; i think its a disease called {clematis wilt?} hopefully your plant will benefit from the same treatment ,good luck ps check the soil it may be too acidic?ok?

  5. Clematis tend to be finicky on some years while thriving in others. My clematis is having a good year this go around, but last year I had some trouble due to a record hot summer. On a cloudy drizzly day (sun can be harsh while transplanting plants) I trimmed the dead leaves and stems off of the plant and put it in a larger pot with organic soil. I then made sure to mulch around the base of the plant. (as this is the KEY to a busy, heavy bloom yield plant) Within a few weeks it was greener and I already needed to put the new growth on a trellis and I got a few new blooms in before the first frost. Hope this helps and your plant bounces back soon!

  6. The roots must be kept cool.Cover the ground or pot with small pebbles and just dampen down, not overwater. Some Clematis will not tolerate pruning at all.
