Why is my hamster TOTALLY afraid of my other hamster? and when put together, they fight

i bought a hamster just a week ago, his name is "pancake". and he is a bit lazy and bored. about a week later, i bought a Pudding hamster. because i thought pancake would be lonely.(both are males) at first i introduced them to each other by putting them in a box with a divider. and soon enough, they were sitting next to each other when i removed the divider. so i thought that everything seemed fine and went to take a bath. and when i came out, my mum rushed to me and told me that were squeaking. actually, only pudding was. pancake was not. ever since then,i had a divider put in between them in their cage. Pancake is kind of bigger than pudding. so i'm wondering, could it be the age difference or something? (they are not of the same breed). also, pudding is super paranoid and scared of pancake now, seeing pancake, he'll run away or climb to the highest part of the cage to avoid him. but pancake will just walk around slowly. i think pancake is about 2 months old while pudding is 1 month old. can anyone give me a solution to this problem? how do i get pudding to not be scared of pancake?! also i don't want the solution to be like "they have to be seperated forever" can anyone pls give me a better answer? Thank you! :D

  1. Do not put your hamsters together at all even if it is just to play.  Hamsters are solitary animals who need to be alone.  They aren't social when it comes to other hamsters but may bond with their owners.  Hamsters may seriously injure or even kill each other.

  2. Is your hamster a syrian hamster? Then you can never put them together. Syrian hamsters are very solitary and territorial in nature. Introducing them to another hamster can cause vicious fighting and even death.

If your hamster is a dwarf hamster, then also it is a myth that dwarf hamsters can coexist peacefully. Dwarf hamsters can live together if they are from the same litter or have been introduced at the same young age. If they are not from the same litter or have an age difference, they can fight too and become territorial like syrian hamsters.

You can try the split cage method where you put a screen in a big cage and both the hamsters on either side until they get used to each other's scent but the success rate is very low for winterwhite dwarfs and just a little bit better for campbell dwarfs.

    Another reintroducing method -

When introducing two hamsters, the best way to do it is in a completely clean, fresh cage. Clean the cage thoroughly to kill any residual traces of the smell of either hamster, and put in fresh, clean bedding. Then put in both hamsters at the same time, and sprinkle mixed seeds into the bedding. Searching for the treats will distract them from each other, and it does not take long for them to forget that the other hamster is a stranger. If they fight anyway, take out the dominant hamster and leave the one who is getting picked on in there for a day, then re-introduce them. Generally, that aggressiveness will be lessened by the fact that the stranger's smell is all around the cage.

Though you do not want to hear it, if the introducing method does not work, better to separate them permanently to prevent the hamsters from viciously fighting and killing each other.

  3. Adult Hams should not be put together. I got mine together, and had to seperate them because they fought, and if they are both male, it makes even more for a reason to not put them together, same s*x doesnt work.

  4. ooo i dout u can get them along but its possible it would be more likley to get them used to each other if they were same breed hold them both and put them in front of each other they will sniff there faces do that often like 2 times a day and everytime do it closer until i can actually let them go and see if they will fite do it about 3 times if they will be fighting dont join them like in the same cage they can kill each other

  5. If ur hamsters are of different breeds (which it sounds like they are), then they cannot be kept in the same cage because they will fight to the death. I would recomend either seperating them in different cages or returning one of them to the petstore. It isn't fair to torture them by putting them together

  6. 1) They are from different litters =]

    Therefore, they will always fight.

    2) Even males from the same litter CAN end up fighting.

    3) You have to seperate them, and keep them in seperate cages from now on. They will and can never be friends.

    4) The divider really only works when trying to breed two hamsters.

    Goodluck =]

  7. Because your hamsters are fighting is cuz they're both males. It's their nature to fight, or like to see who's the best. Try not to keep them together if you can help it.

  8. What 'type' of hamsters are they? Some hamsters are imcompatable with each other or prefer to live alone.

You should either take the last one back to the store or put it in a seperate cage as they will kill each other. :( sounds horrible but its true, my russian hamsters did that.
