Question:

Why is my hamster growing "grass" in her cage and eating it?

Today when I was going to feed my hamster I noticed that she's been growing grass in her cage and I looked in to find her eating it. First of all I didn't know that hamsters could grow grass and I've been wondering if that means its time for me to clean it out but if she's eating it then I don't think that would be the best idea yet. But I would like to know where the grass is coming from and if she needs to be eating it. Is this a dangerous thing?

  1. gross.

    clean the cage!!!!

  2. Yes you need to clean it. The hamster food contains seeds, her p**p & pee are firtilizing them. EWWWWWWW How could the smell not get to you. That's Fuc-ing gross.

  3. dude you really need to clean that cage.

  4. Well what kind of bedding are you using that allows grass to grow? it may be corn if the food has corn in it, i threw some extra food out in my yard and now we have corn growing, but you should clean your hamster's cage about every week depending how big or small it is, the smaller the cage the more you should clean it..

  5. Lol i used to have a pet rat n it did the same thing. but i think its from the seeds u feed it n the water it drink n the bedding makes it grow. but ya i'd say its time to clean the cage. :)

  6. Are you sure its grass not mold? Clean out your cage right now. And just because she is eating it and enjoying it doesn't mean it's good for her.

If you want some safe grass for her to eat then get a small plastic box (tupperware) and fill it with dirt, plant some birdseed, and when it starts to sprout put it in her cage. But be prepared this is messy, so it might be best to do it outside the cage. And don't water it for a day or so before you give it to her so she doesn't get all muddy. She will enjoy eating the sprouts and digging in the dirt. You can also feed her bits of fresh lettuce and fruits and veggies if she is partial to the green stuff.

  7. Oh, this is a good one! Thanks for posting.

Your hamster isn't growing the grass on purpose, unless she's a Wonder Hammie. If you've put one of those snack seed things for her to gnaw on, then the seeds have probably fallen into the cedar chips or newspaper, gotten wet, and are growing. It's definitely time to clean out her cage. The grass won't hurt her, but the bacteria from her cage not being cleaned out could. She's such a good sport...

  8. that usully happens from seeds in the food. but the cage would have to be really wet and moist. clean the cage. very wet cages arent good for small animals and others too.

  9. Hey don't be mad at her she's only learning, like everyone else we had to learn how to look after animals, But a damp or wet bed is very dangerous for animals and especially birds, so the first thing with pets is keep them dry unless you have a duck for a pet then the opposite is called for.

  10. CLEAN THE CAGE AND GET A NEW WATER BOTTLE!!! i waited to long with my rabbit and he got sick becuse underneath of the grass is mold.

  11. clean it before it is something dangerous

  12. Marijuana use among Hamsters is prevelent. And some are smart enough to grow it. I would definetly punish the hamster by locking it up in a cage.
