Question:

Why is my hookah not producing that much smoke sometimes?

I bought a hookah recently...i'll admit i don't know much about hookahs.

I smoked it several times. Sometimes i got large clouds of smoke, but other times it doesn't produce much smoke at all. And another problem...it has a little wierd taste and gives me a headache or at least makes me tired.

I've smoked other hookahs and they were alot more clear(no side taste and headache), and produce alot of smoke...mine only produced that much smoke on several occasions.

So what could i be doing wrong? improper cleaning? packing?

  1. I have a hookah and I have the same problem sometimes, it usually happens because of the water level in the base or bowl our tendency is to put too much. You also might want to try adjusting the little s***w thing with a ball bearing in it (sorry i don't know what its proper name is).

The headaches could be from the shisha your using, fruity flavors tend to make me feel a little sick afterward especially if i haven't eaten before hand.

And for big thick smoke try putting in some half and half coffee creamer or Baileys liquor it doesn't add a weird taste but it gives you thick white smoke and makes you feel kinda like a dragon for a bit...

  2. I would attribute the lack of smoke to either the quality of what you are smoking or the air flow that you are getting.  Smoke can only be produced if you have proper airflow otherwise it will just die out.  You may want to give it a thorough cleaning and find a different product to smoke (not sure if you are smoking tobacco or not) and see if that helps.  It may also be the way you are packing it, but I dunno without actually seeing it.

  3. First thoughts are... there is a leak somewhere. I know it's weird but that a big problem.

But when you add headaches to it. It may be your coals. Make sure they are completely lit before putting them on the bowl. Or switch to a better less CO filled coal like Exotica, Coco Nara, Golden Coals, or 3 Kings.

Also a big consideration is bowl air flow. Buying a Phunnel Bowl will solve this problem, but you probably have a traditional bowl. Loosely pack your bowl with shisha to just under the foil or screen. I suggest taking a toothpick or ice pick and poke through the shisha to the bottom holes to insure air flow.

With headaches and bad air flow could be your hose. Most hookah hoses unless advertised as washable, has a small metal coil to keep the hose shape from collapsing. There might be rust. Nothing to do but through the hose away if it has rust. Be sure to blow the hose out before and after every session this clears residue and if you see rust color come out, toss it. I would switch to a Nammor hose from Hookah-shisha.com. Once you try one of these hoses you won't go back trust me plus they are 100% washable and no metal that can rust.
