I asked this the other day but thought I may get some different answers today...

My horse Sam is sore just on his middle flank area, (as shown in Pic) on both sides, I have NO IDEA what could be causing it!! He is riden basicly only on weekends and wormed up everytime. He flinches and swishes his tail and try's to cow kick not at me but just into the air when i touch it. Just by placing my hand n putting a bit of preasure on him he starts. He is not a horse which doesnt like people near his flank, like i stand under him and when i thouch other areas around this sore area he doesnt care. I no something is makeing him sore but i dont no what. It happens even when i havnt been riding him.???

I have no idea whats wrong. I think i should get the vet out soon.

Its only sore when i touch him he is fine to be riden and its been happening for about 4months now...

He is a really sweet horse and i dont no whats wrong...

He is boss in his paddoc so none of the horses kick him... He isnt hot or anything, anywhere on his body. Its just really weird.... and even if he was kicked why would it be on BOTH sides of his body, its strange....

  1. well there is a few things that could be bothering him,

If you ride him on uneven ground or thick sand it might be making him soar,

Maybe instead of riding him too much you might not be riding him enough, sometimes if a past routine had alot of riding and exercising he might be adjusting to changes,

If he wears shoes make sure they are all on and fit comfortably because, if your working him and his shoes are not fit and comfortable it might be bothering him, the farrier may be cutting his hooves too short or too long,

His saddle might not fit right, it could be irritating his back/flank area,

And about him being the boss in the paddock, that could be the problem, he could be kicking out too much and it making him soar,

    I hope I helped!

  2. He just might not like his flank area touched. My farrier's old foal was like that. She was perfectly healthy, could be touched everywhere except there.

I really doubt it's anything bad, but just incase you might want to ask the vet next time he's out.

  3. A couple of things could be going on.  One, I don't know how long you have been using the saddle that you are, but it could be soring his back, that would explain why both sides are equal when it comes to pain...and it is obviously a pain issue.  Secondly, prior to his behavior, did you jump him or do anything out of the ordinary that could have pulled a stifle or strained him in some way?  Also, have you laid off of him, given him free, not forced exercise and no riding to see if the situation changes?  I can't imagine that this has been going on for 4 months and a vet hasn't seen him...I'm not judging, there are many reasons why one doesn't call the vet right out, I just mentioned it.  If you can see your way clear to do so, I would definitely call your vet as soon as it is feasible for you to do so...It could be nothing, or it could be serious, having gone on this long.

  4. Definitely talk to your vet about this. Any number of things could be causing this soreness/sensitivity, including a change in shampoo, fly spray, feed, hay, pasture, dewormer, or brushes.

Since it is on both sides, I don't think it is pulled muscles. Are his gaits even?  Does he only kick out when under saddle?

    Call your vet Monday.

  5. the pic wont come up but i would call the vet

  6. i really dont know but your horse is really pretty

  7. Hmm.  Well how long has this been going on?  I think you should probably call the vet if it continues.  Some horses are just tickleish in certain areas; but if he was okay before, I'd be worried that something was wrong.
