Question:

Why is my house falling apart?

In the last week, my sewer line has backed up (for the second time in a year) and flooded my bathroom and laminate wood hallway, which I now have to have fixed. Also, my refrigerator started acting up and leaking water because the freezer wasn't working right. Finally, there's something wrong with my bathtub pipes because right behind it is my bedroom, and the carpet in my bedroom is completely soaked with old water. I never saw a bug of any kind in the whole first year I owned my house, and now I've had two ant infestations, spiders, and I've seen two dead (thank goodness) roaches. What is it about owning a house for a year that makes everything suddenly collapse? Has anyone else had this happen?

  1. Was your sewer backup caused by tree roots, or was it a problem at the sewer main?

The most common problem causing leaks in a bathroom are related not to the bathtub but to the toilet.  The leaks can come from the connections between the tank and the seat, or from the supply line or from the refill valve.

Sounds like you need the services of an exterminator, and maybe a plumber, although toilet problems are usually fairly easily fixable by a homeowner.  If it is the bathtub you will need a plumber.  Your refrigerator is another matter.  You may need a repair or a new fridge.

Yeah, home ownership is wonderful, ain't it?  But it beats renting and it beats living in the woods in a shack.  Cheer up.  I have withstood a house fire, bugs, snakes, too many dogs, leaks, electrical problems, clogged air conditioners, and I still like it better than apartment living.
