Why is my landline so crackly?

we are with bt and for quite some time there has been crackles to the extent that you cant hear the person at the end of the line what should i do will it cost a lot to repair is it slowing the internet down.

you have a loose connection somewhere probably outside at the box  you can just check all the connections and any splices that you might have on your line(you could also switch to cable or fios there much faster plus you get cable tv phone line and internet over one wire.)

there could be water in the line does it happen more when it rains? just pay for that phone insurance they offer with service.
