Question:

Why is my laptop slower on the internet?

I have a wireless broadband connection at home. Originally when either my brother or I used our laptops with it, they were both quick. Recently I have found that when on Youtube watching clips or when downloading, that my laptop has become very slow and the clips seem to stall a lot. My brothers is just as fast as it was, so it's not the router or connection at that end.

I've looked for some advice and have run a disk clean up and downloaded both a disk cleaner and firefox to use instead of Internet Explorer, but they haven't helped.

I have plenty of disc space and no more ideas. Can anyone please help?

Thanks

  1. Sometimes the wireless signal can get blocked/disrupted and this can cause a degradation in service.

Try moving around to see if you can get a better signal.

Remember that you have a set amount of internet bandwidth and all users will have to use the same amount (think of the water coming into your house and if everyone turned on the taps how slow the water would flow).

  2. You might have too many programes running at once press ctrl - alt -delete and look in your task manager go to proceses and see which ones are taking up alot of mem and cancel that process be carefull though some programes should not be canceled. Try visiting this site

    http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/sysin...

    Download process explorer.

  3. More memory might help but video files are getting bigger and bigger ... I've just given in and ordered a new machine because I can't stand this one much longer.

Vista is better at sending files than XP - better compression I think.

  6. There are MANY reasons for computer slow downs:

    a] not enough memory

b] too many programs starting up with windows at boot up time

    c] spyware

    d] too many junk files

    e] too many restore points

Routine maintenance the will definitely help restore your PC's speed to what it could/should be...

    1. Increase your Virtual Memory, then

    2. Download and run PageDefrg (free tool from Microsoft).

    3. Run MSCONFIG and deactivate any startup programs that you DON'T want/need to run at boot time

    4. Uninstall any unwanted programs

    5. Ensure that you have more than 500 MB's of free space on your C: drive. (if not, it's not IF your PC will crash...it's WHEN your PC crashes). If not, move your Music/Videos offline to DVD's or CD's.

    6. Purge all temp folders and internet temp files

    7. Run defrag again after all the cleanup you just did.

  7. It could be you have a computer virus or similar malware.  A virus does its own thing and uses your computer's resources and this slows down the things you want to do.  It may also be using your Internet connection for its own purposes so there is less capacity left over for you to play YouTube clips.

  8. Using a registry cleaner can clean up your computer and then make your computer faster,Why?the reason is that there may be some registry errors and remnant, corrupt files and temp files in your computer to cause "computer slow".

Every time you install and uninstall software on your computer and surfing online you create junk in the computer registry.over time, the registry can grow to enormous proportions, especially if the various programs you've installed do not do a good job of deleting and/or updating it's Registry entries. You need to scan and clean your computer with registry cleaner to make it fast.Good Registry Cleaner will improve your computer and Internet performance dramatically!

There are some comparison and review of TOP 5 registry cleaners.

  9. I agree with some here boostin memory can do wonders. but this is a compatability issue, make sure you have all the updates from java, windows media-or what ever your using, if this is windows XP make sure you have SP3 installed, if you have IE 6-it is time to get IE 7, ect. ect. ect. If you intermittance of connection to internte there are other issues involved
