Question:

Why is my male rainbow finch doing all of the nesting work while my female zebra finch does nothing?

I have one female zebra finch and one male rainbow finch....i don't know if they are mating or having eggs cause all of the sudden one day the MALE finch was building the nest but the female wasn't and it was the only one inside of the box most of the time and i gave it more dry grass in the cage and the female didn't do much while the male did all the work......oh and would a male rainbow finch actually mate with a zebra finch??? I wounder what they would look like.........well help me out...

  2. The males in most species of birds are the ones that build the nests.

    If by Rainbow finch, you mean Gouldians, this is certainly so.

    They might be going through the motions (courting, nest building, etc.) but a Gouldian can not breed with a Zebra.
