Why is my mum so angry with me??

Question

I tried to pierce my lip by sticking a needle through it. It went perfectly fine, but I changed my mind and didn't put a stud in the hole. It's healing now but it's a bit bruised and swollen. My mum noticed the injury, I told her about it and she went INSANE, cancelled my allowance AND said that she might not pay for some dental work which I NEED (my front 2 teeth are broken in half).

She's a control freak, and I need her permission to pluck my eyebrows, let alone get a piercing. I knew she'd be a BIT annoyed. But why has she reacted so badly?? You can't even see the hole, and I can cover the bruise with concealer easily. I'm 16, so it's not like I did anything illegal- I could have gone out and got the piercing done professionally without her permission, if I'd wanted. I thought I was being SENSIBLE by 'testing out' how the piercing would look before I got something done which would be permanent for at least a couple of months. I haven't got an infection or anything. Why is this such a big deal for her??

Your mom is freaking out because in her mind you've mutilated yourself.  Your face, no less, where everyone can see.  Our job, as moms, is to protect our babies and the way she sees it, she can't protect you, or you won't let her, and it's making her crazy.

And that "I thought I was being sensible" argument is c**p. You stuck a needle through your lip, and that is anything BUT sensible.  So, if that is the argument you are using with your mother right now, that might make things even worse.

As for denying the dental work, she might be thinking that it isn't worth paying to fix something that you might not take seriously or might ruin again.  Try, "I'm sorry mom, I don't know what I was thinking, this showed some poor judgement didn't it."  And, "I promise that for future piercings I'll talk to you and go to a professional."

It's good that you don't have an infection.  Keep it clean and hopefully your lip, and your relationship with your mom, will heal nicely.

o god i would have gone crazier. lol you could have died. and teeth dont come all that cheap to fix. i did dumb stuff before and payed for it but if i did wat u did i wouldnt have fingers to type! Wow! thats a reaaallllyy bigg dealll

you should of ask for her permissionbecause anything could of went really wrong like now...

soo next time if there is tell her..

but youre is mum is really angry so she is trying to do anything as a punishment i.e...not taking you to the dentist just wait a while and she will calm down reason with and exxagerate the condition youre teeth are in

I can't really blame your mom in this case... it didn't get infected, but it COULD have, not to mention if you're going to try and pierce your lip yourself, she's probably worried about what else you're going to try piercing. It's not really safe; if you wanted to "test out" how it looked, the sensible thing to do would be to clip on jewelry (like a fake lip ring) rather than poke a hole in your face!  She's worried about you, and it really wasn't a great idea.

I do think she is going overboard with the eyebrow thing though --piercings I can see why she would be concerned, since they can get infected and there's the risk if you go to an unreliable place that isn't hygienic. However, plucking eyebrows aren't really dangerous at all; worst that happens, you mess up and look weird.

I guess it is a combination of your mom being more controlling than average, and you doing something a bit risky/stupid.

mistake #1: You could have gotten infected with tetanus or something

mistake #2: You didn't ask and tried to do it behind her back

mistake #3: If your two front teeth are broken in half, why would you want to bring attention TOWARD your mouth!!

it is a big deal because you didn't run it by her or ask her permission to do it, that is just how parents are
