Why is my new 2007 Audi A4 Quattro burning 1 quart of oil every 1500 miles?

It now has 8,000 miles and is burning through 1 quart of oil every 1500 or so miles. Audi says it is normal, but I have my doubts.

  1. As far as I know you should be changing your oil every 3-6 thousand miles.

Also, are measuring from the time you change the oil to 1500 miles? Meaning that you don't run the engine before taking your first measurement? Some of your missing oil may be in the oil filter and stuff when you take your second measurement which may not have been there before.

Also, any oily areas under the hood? Valve covers and stuff can seep oil as you can read from this link http://www.carpartswholesale.com/cpw/val...

You may not be burning oil after all.

  2. I think Audi is lieing to you.  A car with only 8000 miles should not burn any oil unless there is a major engine defect.  Try another dealership for another opinion.  The engine should still be within it factory warranty.

  3. It is my experience (5 Audi's ... and counting) that the new cars take some time to break in; so burning oil is fairly common (this also plagues the BMW M3) ... if the oil burning issue continues after your first service interval (either 12K or 15K), you have a problem.

As a recommendation, when you add your next quart, go with a oil of higher viscosity (if you are adding 5w, use 10w; if 10w, use 15w). The higher weight oil is within Audi's recommended oil grades; the increased viscosity will increase the oil's thickness, which should reduce the overall consumption rate.
