Why is my nose piercing all of a sudden bleeding after having it almost 2 years?

I don't regularly clean it, I must admit. And when I do, its because it gets infected. The last time it was infected I noticed some bleeding that almost wouldn't stop. This time around my piercing is getting infected with the bleeding once again. Can someone help?

  1. Take yourself to your piercer and get a decent quality piece of nostril jewelry. You can get cute little gems on surgical steel or titanium nostril jewelry, so there is NO reason for wearing cheap junk jewelry that may be irritating you.

If your piercing keeps getting irritated, you need to change the way you're taking care of it. Touching your piercing with dirty hands is the number one way to get an infection. Your hands pick up dirt and germs from every surface you touch. When you touch your piercing, you're leaving all of that junk behind for your body to try to clean up. You have to be very, very careful not to touch your piercing without washing your hands off first. If you can manage to keep your hands away from the piercing and clean it once a day, it should stay healthy for you.

Since the piercing is irritated, have your piercer look at it while you're there to get a nice piece of jewelry, just to make sure it's not in need of a trip to the doctor. Assuming that the piercing is ok to treat at home, you can try caring for it with sea salt soaks.

Mix 1/4 teaspoon sea salt in 8oz warm water. Soak your piercing for a few minutes at a time. You can also wash the piercing with anti-bacterial soap if you choose.

If the area doesn't start to improve in a few days, head to the doctor or back to your piercer for help.

Keeping your hands off of your piercing, wearing quality jewelry, keeping your makeup out of your piercing, and giving the area a good rinse in the shower every day should keep it healthy once you've gotten it back on the right track.
