My boy parakeet/budgie opens and closes hin foot/claw then bites on it. Is this normal? This is not the leg with the band on it, but he did bite it once. Oh, and should I remove th band. If yes how? Do you think Petsmart or Petco might be able to do it? Thanks!

  1. One of my parakeets will run his beak along his claws when they're too long so maybe it's time to trim the toenails?  If it's actually biting it's foot hard (making it bleed/red/swollen) I'd take it to an Avian vet and ask what they think.

  2. my cockatiel has a band 2. but if u take it there then they mite take it where they belonged.

  3. he's probably cleaning it, so it's very normal. if he does it really often, and not during "preening sessions," he might be stressed out. try changing toys, or spending more time with him.

if you think that the leg band will be a problem, it's a good idea to remove it. also, i'm not sure if petsmart or petco may be able to do it, but asking around is also healthy. :)

good luck, i hope this helps :)

  4. Just look up on yahoo, "How to parakeet remove leg band" and you'll find how to use it.  You don't really need to remove it though.

My budgie nibbles his foot.  It can be for cleaning or to scratch it.

If the bird is literally BITING his foot, than check to make sure they're is nothing wrong with it.  Maybe it is dirty.
