Why is my resolution so low in Ubuntu?

I just recently installed Ubuntu onto my computer again. I've had it before and it was set to 1280x1024 but now the highest I can get is 800x600. I have installed the right drivers. The monitor is a Dell E177FP and the graphics card is an eVGA Nvidia GeForce 7300 GS. What can I do to fix this?

  1. There's a newer tool in Ubuntu to set the resolution.  You can find it under System -> Administration -> Screens and Graphics.  Or, you can launch it with Alt+F2 then enter

    gksudo displayconfig-gtk

This tool will allow you to set a higher resolution.
