I am living in a house that had a very neglected yard, and I put some sod and seed down to get a yard. I keep it watered, but the sod is yellow and the seed isn't growing but there are tons of mushrooms! What's going on?

  1. a mushroom is not a plant it lives off of decay and mold, which means all your grass is dying, did you rototill the ground before you seeded/laid down sod, maybe over watering the grass, did you use top soil or did you lay everything over existing dead grass, all could be reasons why your grass id dying.

  2. A sod will go yellow, only if it is left rolled up too long. Watering grass will not kill it. So you put sods AND seeds down, why not all seeds, or all grass sods? You did not mention what preparations you made for the repair of your lawn.My approach to this work would be, first till the ground until it is broken down well, you have a nice tilth. Remove all weeds, Rake the ground level, removing any large stones and rubbish. When you get a nice level top on the ground , roll it flat. Then you can  scatter the grass seeds, or lay the sods. If you scatter the seeds, rake then in, and roll again, then wait for your seeds to germinate. If you lay sods, lay them in the style of "interlocking" to avoid rows of straight joints. Use wooden planks to walk on whilst you lay the sods. When this is done roll the whole area again, and water liberally. You will now have a decent "Yard" to be  proud of for many years......a lot of sweat and tears but well worth it.

  3. Mushrooms( or more likely, toadstools) are fungus. They don't need as much water as plants do.
