I am married and we have a son. We were supposed to get 1500 dollars. However, my husband owes back child support. I got a letter from the IRS saying that they would take his 600, and that i would still get the 900 for me and our son. I filed Injured Spouse on my actual tax return too, so i would get my haldf of the money.

However, i got my stimulus check today and it is only for $450. How come they only gave me half of the amount? They took my husbands share, but why are they touching my half?

  1. You got this so totally wrong.

The stimulus was $900 total, $300 for your husband, $300 for you and $300 for your child.  The only way it would have been $1500 was if you and your husband had actually paid $1200 or more in taxes.  You didn't even pay $600 in taxes, so you got the minimum.

2nd, the IRS is splitting the stimulus in half for injured spouse claims.  That includes any money for children.  1/2 of $900 is $450.  You got the correct amount.

  2. did you qualify for $1500 on the IRS stimulus calculator? Or did you just go by the chart.  Either way if it were $1500 you would of received half.

Wait to receive the letter from IRS explaining your amount.  I do know IRS has problem with the dependents the computer was only pick up on child and on some no child.  Maybe the rest will be coming at a later time.  If you can't wait for an answer by mail then contact the IRS at 1-866-234-2942 or visit your local IRS office for assistance.

  3. How did you figure you were "supposed to get" $1500?  Was your tax liability at least $1200?  Or did you hear that the amount for a couple filing jointly was up to $1200, and miss the "UP TO" and assume that you would get the maximum amount?  The letter from the IRS most likely said that with the injured spouse filing you would get half of the rebate.  Reread those letters - I'm going to guess that you made a few assumptions when you read them.

A couple filing a joint return gets between $600 and $1200 depending on how much tax liability they had for the year, plus $300 for each qualifyting child.  It sounds like your tax liability was $600 or less, so your full payment was $600 total for the two of you, plus the $300 for your son, then due to injured spouse filing and the back cnild support you actually got half of the $900 total payment, or $450.

  4. we are a married couple and only got half of what i thought we would. what you get back is based on how much tax you paid last year. we got a refund last year also
