Question:

Why is my toddler lazy in her speech?

My 20 month old daughter, Kate, is very smart. She understands almost everything you say. She talks pretty well. She can combine her words. She does like certain animal sounds and likes to say them a lot. She will often "read" a book out loud to her baby dolls. However, sometimes Kate will only say part of a word. For instance, she can say the word kitty, but sometimes she will only say "ki." Also. with some animal sounds, such as oink, roar, and buzz, she will open her mouth to the position her mouth would be to make the noise, but she doesn't make the noise. If I tell her to make the noise, she will. I don't know why she does this and it worries me a little. She is a smart little girl and I don't want her to be lazy. Has anyone else seen anything like this? Thank you for your help.

  1. Just give her time and keep reinforcing correct speech, but don't be pushy.  FOr example, if she says, "ki" instead of "kitty", instead of correcting her, say, "so, what sound does the KITTY make?" It'll take her some time, but she'll come around.  Actually, you're fortunate that your 20-month-old daughter already talks.  I have a son, who is now 2 years and 8 months, and he's just now starting to say words and short phrases.

  2. i wouldn't correct her every time....it makes them get frustrated......if it really bothers you maybe ask her to repeat herself....i'm sure it makes sense in her head and if you know what she means just enjoy the babytalk....shes not even 2 yet and she sounds like shes already a smart cookie!
