  1. 1. For the first week or so, tortoises are settling into their new home. This is a fairly stressful time, leave it alone.

    2. Too much sleeping can be a sign of cool or hot temps, boring food, etc. Tortoises DO sleep a lot but not all day.

    3. Your best bet is to a.) wait a bit for it to get used to things, and b.) take this time to review the basic cares to make SURE it is getting the right housing, environment, care, and diet. Since you don't say the species, I will point you to a couple general purpose sites-

    4. In zoos, they use 'enhancements' to give the animals more interesting things to do. What we can do with tortoises includes:

    - outside pen with different places to walk, climb, dig, and hide, and different live plants to eat

    - good snack foods that are safe for the species, like a strawberry hidden in a corner of the pen

    - putting in a shallow, easy access pan of water to soak or wade in

    - growing a pot of live food in an indoor pen

    - having a ramp and a second floor in an indoor pen (very popular!)

    - hanging greens from a clip or hood in the pen so the tortoise has to reach for it A LITTLE like they do in the wild

    - some tortoises will actually knock a light-weight plastic ball (Whiffle ball) around. Most don't, but some do.

  2. what do you expect? its a tortoise. like a turtle but bigger. i cant believe this question has 15+ answers already and mine, a logical question, has 1. which isnt even an answer.

it wont do anything. put him on a surfboard or skateboard if you want but i dont recommend it

  3. I do have a trick tortoise school if you want to enrol

  4. what did you really expect an energetic pet? it is a tortoise and they do not do much apart form eat and sleep with only a bit of walking around,  if you want an energetic pet get a dog or gerbil, too many people get a tortoise because they seem to think they area cool pet, well yes they are but only if you don't want an active pet may be if you had researched tortoises first you would not be so disappointed

  5. What do you expect him to do? He's a tortoise - no tortoise is really active. It's not like a dog or anything

  6. Frisbee his ***, get a doggie to play fetch wi him.

  7. this is a perfect example of the quotation:"be careful what you wish for".i'm not lecturing you or anything but please be careful when buying.is this what you realy want?what will you accomplish when you have had this?*sigh*...

you cannot make your tortoise more active in any way.this is the nature of most tortoise.you just got to feed them, let them around, give them home.that's all there is to it.they have nice points too.they may live longer than you are,on one side.turtles usually spend their time sleeping or foraging for food.this is what they do in the wild.you cannot change it.

but maybe you can trade it up again back in the pet shop you got it from.buy a more active pet like a rabbit or a dog.

    best wishes!

  8. is his water warm? my friend had a terapen and by mistake they had him in cold water and he never ate much or did anything but when they found out and changed the temperature he became really active and now eats loads!

  9. Fit some wheels on him.

  10. because you dont love him enough.

  11. It's a friggin tortoise mate not a friggin dog,the only way to get him more active is to stick a rocket up his ar*e and put him on a skate board, don't do that though.

  12. it's a tortoise ... thats how they roll

  13. What you expecting it to do? somersaults & backflips

  14. Did you expect him to be telling jokes all day long.

For God's sake - it is a tortoise.

What were you expecting - Riverdance?

  15. well he is a tortoise! they are not designed to be quick or very active, especially this time of the year when its body starts to naturally slow down ready for hibernation so all its gonna do is eat and sleep.

  16. Because it's a tortoise.

  17. LOL Are you serious? Roll on winter - he'll sleep for 6 months then! My freind had once when I was a child and all he did was eat lettuce and walk slowly round the garden.

  18. Just love him, he'll appreciate it in his own slow way :o)

  19. everyone has pretty much summed it up - what were you expecting? Its a tortoise! they dont do much but eat and sleep, if you had researched them before getting one you would have realised this.
