  1. Mike is correct in his evaluation of how TV's are setup in stores, but I would not pay the geek squad or any BB employee to touch my TV with a ten foot pole.

You can eaisly go to Fry's Electronics and buy a calibration DVD (Sound and Vision Home Theater Tune-up disc, DVE or Avia) which will easly guide you step by step in setting up the TV to get it's optimal picture.  By the way the disc can be had for about 15.00 (regular or HD).  I prefer S&V Tune up because it is very user friendly for beginners while the Avia is more of a professional setup disc.

Calibrating is very easy to do in the user menu, and if you are going to spend big bucks to get the TV calibrated, don't waste 100 on the geek squad and spend 300.00 for a professional isf calibrator who will go way beyond what the geek squad does and goes way beyond typical menu settings.  Do a search on isf calibartion to find a local one in your area.

Seriously I wouldnt trust Best Buy employees to do anything to any of my electronics, and I have been installing home theater systems as a hobby for years.  Heck they all think Bose and Monster are the best things out there, when they are overpriced garbage.

  2. i no dude i have the same problem and it is so annoying!!!!! i feel like i wanna take a hammer and beat the heck out of it! lol

  3. Hey there, Im a Home Theater Specialist, so "unfortunately" I know all the ins and outs of TV manufactures minds.

Companies like Samsung, Sony, LG and Sharp - they know their TVs will be displayed next to their competitors TVs, so they set the manufacture settings on the TV to be as bright as possibly possible in order to make THEIR TV stand out from the TVs on the wall; it's something companies like Sony and Samsung spend hundreds of thousands of dollars a year on researching how to get that "first impression" for their TV.

Once you get home with that TV, youre in a completely different environment, the fluorescent lights of the store are gone, there are no competitors TVs in close vicinity, and now you got a their TV which doesnt look much like how it did in the store.

Another huge problem with this is how much energy is consumed when manufacturers adjust the brightness to extreme high levels. Simply recalibrating your TV, something that can be done at Best Buy for $300, will save you an average of $100-$150 a year in energy bills. PLUS the TV lives much longer because it's not working as hard, and the picture as a result actually looks a lot... lot... and I mean a LOT better.

So in your case, the best thing to do is to schedule a Calibration service through Best Buy, they send the GeekSquad out to your house with a $10,000 computer and change all the firmware and software in the TV (not something you can do on your TV menu) resulting in a much more healthy realistic picture that saves money.

    Hope this has helped!

  4. is it old?

  5. a broken tv

  6. Brightness and contrast usually go together. For a typical screen (e.g. my computer), it gets really bright if the contrast is at 100% and the brightness at 0%. A completely white screen has 100% brightness and 100% contrast. Try to tune down your contrast if there is the option to.
