Question:

Why is my utilities bill is really high this month, even though I am not using any more power than usual?

Compared to last year, it is double what it was. There has been no raise in price of electricity, it is my KWH (kilo watt hours) that have doubled.

The only thing that I have changed is I switched out a power bar(the things you can plug in to give you more plug ins) for one that was suppose to be better, but that is it. The A/C runs like it normally does, lights are not left on, and I called the utility company and they were not sure why this was happening. Also, I know a lot of people in town who are having the same issue with their bill being way higher than normal. Any ideas? Oh and don't answer if you are an idiot just looking for 2 points, I would appreciate useful answers. Thanks

  1. First make sure that current and past electric bills were actual not estimates. Check usage per day since billing cycles can vary;  next check degree days. If these don't give you an answer have your A/C checked.

  2. Since your KWH is doubled compared the same period last year, chances are your meter was misread.

This happened to me once. When I called the company they asked me if I can access the meter (which I did) and I read the current reading to them on the phone. They did the adjustment on the phone so I didn't get overcharged. Many of us have set up autopayment and don't pay attention to the bills (and they are doing e-billing making it easier to be overlooked). It's good that you catch this early.

  3. It could be that your meter was miss read, this used to happen alot.

or you could be using more power than you realize.

  4. They might not have read the meter and only given you an estimate, you should check what the meter was last year compared to this year (it should be on your old statement).  I would phone the meter company and tell them you think you have been over charged.

  5. Yes and to make it worse I have retired. As long as they propagate  GW  they will rob us as long as we allow it.

  6. the cost of energy increases by about 7-8 percent every year. You also should look at the consumption versus last year or cost index, maybe global warming is effecting your utility bill...yes I am referring to your other question "How ignorant do you have to be , to believe in global warming?"

  7. because if cost of Energy rises, your rate will increase as well.  you should try looking into a contract w/FIXED rate with the company instead of a non-contract w/VARIABLE rate.

  8. because the electric and gas company always cheat consumer. i was gone for 2 week and my bill was the same as before.
